About the Bart Hopple Memorial Swim
In 1991, the Different Strokes Swim Team (DSST)
ran its First Annual Bart Hopple Memorial Swim
to honor the passing of its co-founder to
complications stemming from AIDS. For the past
16 years we have continued sponsoring this
hour-long swim as an annual fundraiser.
Bart is remembered as a funny, energetic
triathlete who was always ready for his next
challenge. This swim provides an opportunity
for current team members and members of
the community to continue his legacy.
The objective of this event is for team members,
either individually or as part of a relay, to
complete as many lengths of the pool as possible
in a continuous one hour swim. Team members
collect pledges from family and friends, who
donate money on a per length or lump sum basis.
Every year, volunteers from Front Runners help
to time and record the yardage achieved by team
members.
It's a fun event, not a race. Many of our athletes
use this event as a conditioning exercise or to
evaluate their progress toward developing an
efficient stroke technique.
See you at the pool!
